Middle School Debate February Update: Seven Lakes Tournament

$

Kinkaid Middle School debaters recently competed at the Seven Lakes tournament.

They were competing at a high school level competition in the beginners division, so most of their opponents were freshmen and sophomores.

The partnership of Collin Lawrence and Sam Segal won the novice public forum debate division, placing first out of 37 teams from 14 schools.  They won their final round against Stratford High School in Spring Branch on a 3-0 decision from the judges.  They were debating the Voting Rights Act.

Kinkaid had three other teams that made the octofinals (top 16), meaning that Kinkaid had one quarter of the teams that advanced past the preliminary rounds.

These octofinal teams were:

Lauren Ho/Amanda Roff

Remy Kalai/Alexander Treistman

Anish Odhav/Minnhy Truong

In addition, Kinkaid had three students individually recognized in public forum for their speaking.  The following students place in the top 10 speakers out of 74 participants:

Sam Segal: 2nd place

Amanda Roff: 5th place

Remy Kalai: 7th place

Finally, Kinkaid also had a handful of students competing in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, an individual event that discussed the topic of environmental protection versus resource extraction in developing countries.

Austin Koort advanced into the octofinals and also earned the 1st place award for best speaking out of 56 students from 18 schools.

Congratulations to these middle school debaters!  These are great results for a competition at the high school level.

Kinkaid’s seventh graders are now finished competing for this school year.  Kinkaid’s eighth graders have one more competition on the weekend of Feb. 21 & 22, 2014 at Olle Middle School.

Kinkaid 8th grade debaters had a very successful tournament at Olle Middle School this past weekend.  This was one of the most competitive tournaments that the students have attended with all the top middle school debate programs in Houston participating in the event.

David Liang won first place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate out of 46 students.  In addition to David, Kinkaid had two students also reach the octofinals or the top 16.  They were Edward Chamblee and Austin Koort.  Students in Lincoln-Douglas compete individually.  Their February topic was whether developing nations should prioritize environmental protection over resource extraction.

The partnership of Anish Odhav/Minhhy Truong won second place in Public Forum Debate out of 32 teams with Collin Lawrence/Sam Segal earning third place.  Their February topic was the Supreme Court's recent decision on the Voting Rights Act.

This will be the Kinkaid’s last middle school debate competition for the semester (until the team attends the junior nationals this summer in Kansas).

Congratulations to the whole team for its hard work!

Kinkaid Middle School Debate wins national championship in Lincoln-Douglas Debate

Kinkaid's middle school recently won the national championship in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and was recognized with a "Debate School of Excellence" award by the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA), the honor society for the team’s activity!

The NSDA National Championship took place in Kansas and had participants from throughout the United States.  Each school was allowed to enter six students in Lincoln-Douglas Debate, who argued the topic of digital privacy vs. national security.  The students competed in five preliminary debates against different opponents and were awarded a win or loss, as well as points for their presentation skills.  It took a winning record of 3-2 or better with high points for presentation to make it into the elimination round (top 32).  From that point on, the students advanced based on wins and losses to the octofinals (top 16), quarterfinals (top 8), semifinals (top 4), and finals (top 2).  When the tournament reached the top 2, both students were from Kinkaid creating a "close-out!"  This feat is rare at a national championship.

The co-national champions are Kinkaid students Anish Odhav & Sam Segal.  In the semifinals, Anish beat a student from Valley High School in Des Moines, Iowa, and Sam beat a student from The Academy of Higher Learning of Tarzana in Los Angeles, California.

In addition to these amazing results, David Liang was a quarterfinalist and earned a 10th place award for speaking based on overall judge points, and Jiya Ghei was an octofinalist.  Both had 4-1 records in the preliminary rounds.  Kinkaid had the best overall showing in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.  At the point when the team reached the octofinals, one quarter of elimination round participants were from The Kinkaid School!  That is an outstanding showing.  Finally, Collin Lawrence achieved a 3-2 winning record but missed the elimination rounds by one point.  To have a winning record at the most difficult middle school competition in the country is a proud accomplishment!

To see Kinkaid students receive their awards, please view the video of the ceremony the livestream website (link below).  The part that involves Kinkaid students starts at about 60 minutes into the ceremony and lasts for about 7 minutes:
 http://new.livestream.com/accounts/847769/middleschoolawards?query=&cat=event.

After the students had received trophies, all of the middle school champions were invited to go on stage at the high school awards ceremony to be recognized by the older students who also compete in speech and debate.  The high school ceremony takes place in a huge convention hall with many people in the audience.  It is an impressive experience to be in that room.  When the middle school kids went onto the convention center stage, the crowd went wild and gave the younger students a HUGE standing ovation.  Watching the older kids show such pride in the future of their activity was an overwhelmingly positive moment.  To view the video with Sam & Anish on the big stage, please start at 8:36 (for about two minutes) of the first video here: http://new.livestream.com/accounts/8941059/speechanddebate.

The Kinkaid Students behaved amazingly as a team.  Kinkaid had eight students participate in this event, including Lauren Ho, Austin Koot, and Minhhy Truong.  Austin also did Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and Lauren and Minhhy partnered up to debate in Public Forum over an incredibly difficult topic regarding the Ukraine crisis and NATO.  These eight kids were professional, gracious, supportive, and respectful in everything they did this past week in Kansas.  They championed each other and remained positive through everything.

Beekeeper visits the Kinkaid Middle School!

$

Special guest Michael Kelling, a beekeeper and retired teacher from Brenham, Texas, recently visited the Kayem Library in the Middle School to talk to 5th graders about bees.  He talked about the different kinds of bees, their behavior around the hive, and the important role that bees play in our lives.  Mr. Keller quoted Albert Einstein to help illustrate the importance of bees in our lives:

“If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.”
― Albert Einstein

During the presentation, the students were quizzed on honey bee terminology that they had learned in class.  After Mr. Kelling’s talk, the students asked some questions, and then visited three centers around the library.  One center had a sampling of honey made from the bees.  In the second center, students tried on a full beekeeper suit complete with coveralls, long gloves, hat and veil.  The third center allowed the students an up-close view of a working hive of over 2,500 bees.

The Kinkaid School's Theater Company presents The Miracle Worker: Oct. 18th & 19th, 2014

The Upper School Theatre Company at The Kinkaid School proudly presents The Miracle Worker, by William Gibson, in the Brown Auditorium on Saturday, October 18 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, October 19 at 4:00 p.m.  Both productions will be sign-language interpreted by interns from the ASL interpreter program at the University of Houston.  Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.   Recommend for ages 9+

Few stories reveal the courage and resilience of the human spirit as well as The Miracle Worker.   This family drama is based on the story of young Helen Keller, deaf and blind since infancy, and her heroic teacher, Annie Sullivan, who struggles to reach into Helen's isolation and bring her into contact with the outside world.

The director, Michelle Ludwig, is excited to share this powerful story with the community and comments: “'Grit' is a popular buzz word in education these days, but I can't think of a better model for this "new" concept than the historical figures of Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller.  It's been so inspiring to work on this show and remind myself and my students of the power of perseverance.”

7th and 8th grade students at The Kinkaid School are preparing to see the play by reading it in their English classes.  To understand more about the challenges of being deaf and blind, several classes recently had a Skype conversation with Jaimi Lard, a graduate from the Perkins School in Boston, an institution deeply connected with Helen Keller’s story.  Jonathan Frumovitz, a 7th grade student who attended, is looking forward to seeing the production: “I’ve learned how difficult it must have been to break through the barrier between Helen and her understanding that everything has a name. I am looking forward to watching the play here at Kinkaid and seeing the actors perform Helen's ‘A-ha’ moment."

Allison Reynolds ’15 plays Annie Sullivan: “Annie Sullivan is a dynamic woman.  The best part of discovering this character has been to find the balance between her confidence and determination to teach Helen and the lightness in which she handles the Kellers. This show really is beautiful and Annie is truly inspiring. “

The six primary roles in the show have been double-cast:

October 18, 7:00 pm features: Margaret Durning, Alex Eastman, Alex Goeringer, Rebecca Noel, Meagan Roberts and Evan Rosen.

October 19, 4:00 pm features: Eloise Detmering, Ty Doran, Lily Fitzpatrick, Christina Oti, Harrison Poe and Allison Reynolds.

Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the door or in advance by contacting the Box Office at 713.243.5442box.office@kinkaid.org

Eighth Grade Rocket Launch!

Kinkaid eighth grade science students participated in a rocket launch outside on Thursday and Friday, October 16th & 17th, 2014.  The skies were clear, and the weather was nice outside during these two days.

The students modeled their designs using rocket simulation software prior to building and launching. They then assembled their rockets from parts rather than building from kits as in previous years.  The students then measured the height of the rockets after launch.  Lastly, the students discussed some variables that led to more successful rocket launches.
